Position title: Project Director

Department / Location: Program / Kathmandu

Reports to: Direct Line Supervision: Deputy Country Director Inter-Line Supervision: N/A

Collaboration With: Internal: All HKI/N staff including other programs and thematic managers External: Government and its departments, HQ, Regional Offices

Grade/steps: A11/6

Job Purpose: This position will be responsible to lead the ARCH project and undertake research and focused consultations to generate data useful for policy and decision-making processes, communicate the information to stakeholders for promoting and protecting optimal breastfeeding practices according to the recommendations of WHO and UNICEF.

Overall Responsibilities: The position is responsible for ensuring HKI’s best practices are upheld, including adherence to the code of conduct, policies and procedures, financial accountability and making sure official matters are kept confidential. Ensuring quality is a primary objective of HKI’s programming and monitoring and evaluation oversight is a requirement of all coordinators and managers and above to achieve the best outcomes possible. As gender and social inclusion (GESI) is a cross-cutting and core component for HKI programs, all personnel are required to ensure GESI sensitivity and integration where they work. Oversee and ensure GESI aspects and indicators are addressed across institutional strategic and programmatic levels.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

Regular Duties

  • Support Country Directors by providing technical oversight to country project coordinators in Cambodia and Nepal (see annex A for Scope of Work of Country Project Coordinators) including travel to and within these countries.
  • Contribute to the development of annual work plans for the region and for each country.
  • Ensure that country and regional narrative reports are submitted to HKI Headquarters and the funder as required by project agreements.
  • Keep other key project staff at the regional and headquarters levels informed about progress of the project.
  • Serve as key liaison with the global Project Director based in Washington D.C. to ensure the technical quality of the project and milestones are achieved at the country and regional levels according to plan.
  • Liaise with governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and other partners as needed.

Programmatic:

  • Oversee assessment of the infant feeding landscape in the countries.
  • Oversee the development of country implementation plans.
  • Oversee execution of research activities and subcontracts.
  • Oversee development and execution of orientation and training on complementary feeding issues, communication and advocacy.
  • Attend regional conferences and engage participants in order to raise awareness of issues around marketing of complementary foods and supplements.
  • Attend global conferences as necessary.
  • Oversee development of materials communicating findings and lessons learned from research projects that are important for decision-makers.
  • Communicate findings from research to decision-makers in a position to utilize the information.
  • Submit technical information as requested for external audiences for review and approval before release.

Financial and Administrative:

  • Work with HKI Country Office, Regional Office and HQ to manage the development of annual budget.
  • Manage personnel for project in compliance with HKI policies and oversee initiatives to develop

Qualifications and Competencies:

Educational Degree: Master's degree or PHD in Nutrition or Public Health.

Experiences years: 

  • Minimum Ten years’ of experience in Health and Nutrition.
  • Working experience in research-based organization and data analysis skill.

Team player and Leading the team:

  • Excellent capacity building, team building/management, and coordination skills.
  • An ability to delegate responsibilities effectively and coach and mentor junior staff.

Communication skills:

  • Ability to write /produce the program reports & articles for publication.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and confident to effectively interact and communicate with government, academia, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with external contacts as well as internal colleagues.

Flexible and multitask:

  • An ability to work in challenging and changing environments, and to see through challenges to find solutions.
  • An ability to maintain balance when under stress.

Experience using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint:

  • Computer literate and proficient in using MS-Office.

Others:

  • Technical knowledge in areas related to breastfeeding, complementary feeding and nutrition.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in program development and management.
  • Ability to travel periodically internationally.
