Job Description

The CEO will be based in Kathmandu, Nepal and support NHA to provide strategic vision and leadership in delivering NHA’s goals and objectives. The CEO will manage NHA’s staff and activities, ensuring excellence, exceeding targets for new business and direct utilization, and adhering to NHA principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. As a key member of the Executive Board, the CEO will coordinate and collaborate across both Nepal’s and international hydropower sector and practices globally. In supporting NHA’s projects delivery, the CEO will coordinate with national, regional, and local government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. The CEO will lead new business efforts for sustainability, by leveraging global capabilities across NHA membership. The CEO will expand NHA’s global partner network and raise NHA’s profile in the hydropower sector, climate resilience, and other relevant forums.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The CEO will undertake responsibilities in three main areas of project delivery:
i) new business development and growth, ii) market positioning and knowledge sharing, and iii) communications, office and staff management. The CEO will build a network of memberships across the hydropower sector to leverage project experience and build a broad base of expertise that can be used for advocacy, technical assignments, proposals and marketing.

i) Business Development and Growth
  • Support implementation of the strategic vision and leadership of NHA in the hydropower sector in Nepal.
  • Collaborate across sectors both in Nepal and globally to leverage synergies and capabilities in order to support Nepal’s hydropower sector growth, focusing on sustainability standards.
  • Lead revenue generation to support NHA’s activities through sponsorships, membership, training programs, consulting services, NHA annual conferences, seminars and workshops, and publications including the Nepal Hydropower Database.
  • Strengthen and expand strategic relationships with national and global development agencies and organizations.
ii) Market Positioning and Knowledge Sharing
  • Raise NHA’s profile and reputation as a leader in the voice for the hydropower sector in Nepal.
  • Establish linkages with international hydropower initiatives, industry networks, and knowledge-sharing platforms and participate in events either in-person or virtually that provide strategic opportunities to raise NHA’s profile locally and internationally.
  • Develop knowledge products, technical articles, blogs, thought pieces, etc. that highlight NHA experience for dissemination via online and other channels.
  • Lead analytical and knowledge generation/dissemination activities which build awareness and systems in key technical aspects of hydropower development. Lead the discussions around developing and implementing sector strategy and lead country-specific policy work in hydropower; keep abreast with the latest procurement, social and environmental practices for hydropower projects, and ensure adequate consideration of these issues in project planning, design and implementation. The CEO should familiarize with evolving science and technologies such as climate change resilience etc.
iii) Communications, Office & Staff Management
  • Manage the activities of the Association including board meetings, AGM, and elections.
  • Oversee communications of the Association including NHA’s national and international relationships.
  • Manage a team of future staff for new business growth, supporting projects, and expanding NHA’s market position with clients and counterparts.
  • Recruit and onboard employees with the skills necessary to achieve NHA growth and project support. Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.
Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional and technical experience and a bachelor’s degree. Equivalent combinations of experience and education will be considered.

Experience and knowledge in the following areas would be highly desirable:
  • Business development and communications, marketing.
  • Basic knowledge of the hydropower sector.
  • Interacting with government, international agencies and/or private sector representatives
  • Strong organizational, research, and oral presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a team and intercultural environment, with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Nepali and English.
  • Willing to travel to project sites and also to represent NHA in relevant international meetings and conferences.
  • Demonstrated experience developing technical proposals for international donor clients, including designing technical solutions, building consortiums, writing technical sections and/or leading proposal development.
  • Must have highly developed interpersonal, team facilitation, and presentation skills, and a demonstrated track record of motivating and managing teams.
  • Able to build and maintain excellent working relationships with staff at all levels of the organization and external clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Possess technical knowledge and skills as evidenced by project results, publications, reports, proposals, and/or public presentations
